Take a few minutes and watch Michael Wesch. He is such an inspiration to me as a teacher and scholar... and he is paving a new way of thinking and being in the world. A way of being that I want to help create.
I regularly teach an online graduate courses for educators on teaching and learning online. Unfortunately, almost every version of the course that I’ve taught or seen begins with the assumption that we can take what we know about teaching in the physical classroom and directly apply it to the online environment. The best versions of this type of class acknowledge that you cannot just copy and paste from the face-to-face to the digital. What’s more, most (if not all) approaches to understanding online teaching and learning rarely consider what conception of education is being assumed. For this week and this week only I laid down my concerns with the nature of humans in education. You dodged a bullet, Spencer. Although I will say this: Post hoc ergo propter hoc. And I remarked what a curious state of things it would be, if every pupil of our national schools knew, let us say, that the moon is two thousand one hundred and sixty miles in diameter, and thought at the same time that a good paraphrase for “Can'st thou not minister to a mind diseased?” was, "Can you not wait upon the lunatic?" If one is driven to choose, I think I would rather have a young person ignorant about the moon's diameter, but aware that "Can you not wait upon the lunatic?" is bad, than a young person whose education had been such as to manage things the other way. As I have noticed with other previous writings, themes and concepts from hundreds of years prior are eerily applicable to present day.
