Egan's Future of Education

I have to admit that in explaining to relatives and friends why I was going to Canada for school I went for shock and awe. “Look, there’s a guy there that is studying Imaginative Education.” [ Wide eyes, gasps in amazement. ] Unfortunately, I did not spend the time to explain just what IE meant. At a fundamental level, I get it; but what I continue to grapple with are the implications of cognitive tools.

Having read The Educated Mind, Getting it wrong from the beginning, and An imaginative approach to education prior to this course, I feel like I “get,” on the whole, how cognitive tools influence K-12 teaching and learning. What the Future of Education uncovered for me was how cognitive tools might play into and inform adult education. Teachers have to learn to teach “imaginatively” to the equip students with their own sets of cognitive tools. I am not convinced that there is as wide of a gulf between pedagogy and andragogy as we think and so I wonder: If teacher education can be transformed to embody an imaginative approach, what might an imaginative approach to professional development look like? Beyond teacher training and development, how might cognitive tools reframe how we educate adults in general? Closer to my Masters work, how might an imaginative framework inform educational technology? To shift the question, in what way are cognitive tools and technologies similar? Are they comparable? I know that these are questions that must be explored as environmental and aboriginal education have been recently. If this is the future of education, sign me up.
